Enemies & Predators of Rats

The rat is one of the most reviled creatures in many cultures. Some, however, hold the rat in high regard. Regardless of the cultural distinctions, rats are most widely known for their ability to carry diseases to humans.

Rats have one main predator and that is humans. In urban area, rat populations can grow to an amazing size. Rats will continue to breed and multiply, unless they are controlled. As the number one predator of rats, humans use a variety of methods to reduce the numbers of these pests. Traps, baits, and other extermination methods are used throughout most parts of the world to kill rats. Other rat control includes some natural repellants, such as peppermint oil or wormwood oil. Whichever methods are chosen, the goal is to rid an area of as many rats as possible. Many times, employing professional pest control companies is the most effective means of eradicating large numbers of rats.

Other rat predators include cats. They will prey on rats that invade your home and often times, can rid or significantly control the rodent population in and around the home. Cats normally will chase and kill mice, but if the feline is a large species, it can take care of rats as well.

In urban areas, gulls will prey on rats. Many times, you will see gulls at garbage dumps, or other sites where humans drop garbage. Gulls and other large city birds look for the rats that scavenge through the trash.

In the wild, rats are a food for raptors and other birds of prey. Owls, falcons, hawks and other species will hunt for rats after dark, when they are the most active. Another wild predator of rats is the snake. Snakes will move quickly and strike effectively to catch rats. Their hunting skills make them effective rat predators. All of these predators working together will result in keeping the rat population under control.
