Rat Deterrents

Keeping rats out of your home can be hard. Rats are smart creatures that seek the food, warmth and shelter that humans provide easily to them. Spilled food or easily accessible garbage is all it takes to get a rat problem started.

Deterrents for rats can be natural, in the form of peppermint oil or owning a cat. They can also be electronic, such as an ultra high frequency unit that emits a sound rats can hear that drives them away. Whichever methods you choose, you need to find the one that works best for you and your particular rat problem.

Natural deterrents have been proven to work well, if they are maintained frequently. Peppermint oil on cotton balls placed in area where rats are found can drive them out. Other scent methods, such as used cat litter and ammonia, or urinal cakes with their strong odors can deter rats naturally. Replacing the scented item frequently makes the method much more effective.

Electronic methods can work, as well, but they must be put in the proper places to be effective. Since sound doesn't travel through walls easily, no barriers can be between the device and the rat's living area. Another issue with the sound emitting devices is that household pets can also hear it. This can be a problem for dog and cat owners, so it's best not to use these devices if you have pets.

Cats and ferrets make good rat deterrents, too. These animals are natural enemies of rats and will usually hunt the rats, if allowed. Getting a cat or ferret is a large responsibility, so make sure you are ready to be a responsible pet owner after the rats have been chased out.

If you have a large population of rats, though, it's always best to contact a pest control expert to come up with effective solutions for you and your family.
