Types of Rat Varieties


Cotton Rat

Cotton rats get their name from an affinity for cotton. They are fairly large, stocky rats with a unique, s-shaped tooth. These rats prefer the outdoors and keep mostly a herbivore diet. Their breeding is prolific.


Norwegian Water Rat

Norwegian water rats are the most widespread rat due to adaptability and breeding. They originated in Asia centuries ago and spread with Europeans utilizing human resources to thrive. These are disease carrying scavengers.


Giant Mole Rat

Giant mole rats are an endangered species of their own doing. Dense populations jeopardize habitats. They live mostly underground in packs. These are not pests. Sharp teeth and a cautious nature are their defense mechanisms.


Fruit Rat

The fruit rat is an excellent climber and prefers nesting in elevated settings. They can devastate fruit crops once ripened. Control is best done with traps, baits, and enabling natural predators – birds of prey.


Western Wood Rat

Western wood rats are shy, nocturnal, omnivorous, and earn the nickname packrat by hoarding materials for their middens. They urinate in these dens which can crystallize for generations. Uniquely, they trade found items.
