Termites swarm as a prelude to reproduction. The male and female reproductives of a colony fly away in one group and mate upon landing. They are the only termites with wings. Swarm frequency and timing depend on species.

Each termite colony has a distinct odor. It helps these social insects identify members and intruders. Also, the pheromone odor is used for trails. Workers lay down the scent once they find a food source to lead others.
