Types of Termites - Termite Identification

Dampwood Termites

Dampwood termites prefer wet wood as their primary source of food and shelter. They are about an inch in length and most species reside above ground. The three main types are Pacific, Desert, and Florida dampwood termites.

Distribution of Subterranean Termites

Subterranean termites cause extensive damage throughout the world. Several types are spread across North America. There is the eastern, light southeastern, southeastern, Pacific Coast, and Formosan “super termite” termite.

Soldier Termites

Soldier termites have a single purpose of defending the colony. They have large, solid heads and large, strong mandibles and are positioned at the nests opening. Soldiers are blind and defend by attacking unknown scents.

Queen Termites

The queen is the central member of a termite colony and critical to its success. One is not solely dependant on her, though. Other reproductives help birth termites, take her place in death, and mate to start new colonies.

Formosan Termite

Formosan termites are known at the “super” termites. They are very aggressive with colonies reaching a million strong. Homes or “cartons” are above ground. Structures, boats, and underground cables are all known victims.

Drywood Termites

Drywood termites are the second most feared termite in the U.S.. They target any wood with low moisture content. A male and female begin the colony and young start as workers. The reproductive leave during swarming season.
