Dampwood Termites

Dampwood or rottenwood termites are a species of termites that live above ground and prefer wet wood as their food and shelter source.

Dampwood termites are some of the largest termites, up to an inch in length. They don't need any contact with the soil, since they get their moisture from their food source. Dampwood termites are often found in wood that is decaying.

In terms of cleanliness, this species of termite is not as meticulous about its colony as other termites are. The waste generated by dampwood termites are usually left in the tunnels and galleries, or living areas, of the colony.

The three main types of dampwood termites found in North America are the Pacific dampwood, the desert dampwood and the Florida dampwood termite. Like subterranean termites, the areas they inhabit help to identify these termites.

The Pacific dampwood termite is the largest species of termite native to North America. This termite creates the most destruction in the western coastal areas. This damage is similar to the amount done by the eastern subterranean termite, in terms of money. Sometimes, Pacific dampwood termites are transported to other areas of the country in shipments of lumber. However, this termite has not been able to establish colonies outside of its territory.

Desert dampwood termites are found in the southwest and Texas. These termites are unique in the fact that, although they are dampwood termites, they live and feed on wood that is underground, making them subterranean, as well. It will attack the roots of shrubs and trees, as well.

Lastly, the Florida dampwood termite is located in southern Florida and the Keys. This termite lives in damp logs and will attack the limited structures in the area as another food source.
